How to Change Wi-Fi Password: A Step-by-Step Guide

Are you looking to change your router’s WiFi password? Here’s a guide to help you do that. Cybersecurity experts suggest changing your password frequently to keep unauthorized users from accessing your router. To make sure your password is secure, it should contain a mix of numerical values, symbols, and upper-lower case texts. But don’t forget to store it securely or memorize it.

To change your password, follow these steps based on the router you are using:

TP-Link Routers:

  • Login to your admin panel using the default login credentials, which are admin and admin, at http://192.168.0.1/ or http://192.168.1.1/.
    TP-Link-1
  • Once logged in, go to “Wireless” and then to “Wireless Security” settings.
  • If it’s not already selected, choose “WPA/WPA2 – Personal (Recommended)”.
  • Enter your new wireless password in the field.
    TP-Link-2
  • Save changes for them to take effect.

D-Link Routers:

  • Log in to your router settings at http://192.168.1.1/ using “admin” as the username and leaving the password field blank.
    D-Link Routers
  • Go to Wireless Settings and enter your new password in the Pre-Shared Key field.
    Wireless Settings
  • Click Save Settings to save the configuration.

NETGEAR Routers:

  • Go to http://routerlogin.com/ or http://routerlogin.net/.
    NETGEAR
  • Enter “admin” as the username and “password” as the password.
  • Under the BASIC menu, go to Wireless.
    BASIC
  • Under Security Options (WPA2-PSK), enter your new password in the Password (Network Key) fields.
  • Apply it, and the router will reboot with the new configurations.

These steps can also be applied to mobile devices (Android & iOS) as it uses a web-based GUI. While TP-Link, D-Link, and NetGear are the most popular router companies, the configuration process for other brands such as Linksys, Asus, and Tenda will be similar to the above.
