A Brief Introduction on Fiber Closures

In this article, we will talk about an equipment that helps in generating space/current for optical fiber, we will also discuss about two types of equipment that are generally available in the market.

Fiber closure is an equipment which is generally used for creating space for splicing together the bunch of outdoor fiber optic cables. They are also called as fiber optic splice closure or fiber optic joint. Fiber trays and fiber optic closures inside will safeguard the joint segments of the outdoor fiber cables and the fused fiber.

Generally, there are two types of fiber splice closures. One is the horizontal type and the other is the vertical type.

Horizontal Fiber Closure

They are shaped either cylindrically or flat. They provide protection and space for the cable splicing and fusing. They can easily be buried or mounted aerial or used in underground applications. The best thing about them is they can fit tons of fiber connections. That’s the reason they are being used more often than vertical closures. They are perfectly designed to be dustproof and waterproof. They can sustain the pressures of 70-105 KPA as they are made with super tensile construction plastics. They can bear the temperatures ranging from -40 degrees to 80 degrees Celsius.

Vertical Fiber Closure

They are called as dome type closures as they are shaped like a vertical dome. Vertical fiber optic splic closures are specifically designed for buried applications. They are made of high-quality engineering plastic. Basically, they are available with 1outlet/inlet,  2outlet/inlet, 3outlet/inlet ports which are used depending on the kind of applications. They are mostly used in fiber optic networks and telecommunications

Fiber optic closures are made of high tensile, industrial grade plastic with an authentic moisture barrier. They are also technically optimized for ageing resistance and sustain against the ultraviolet light radiation and natural environmental factors. They materials used in manufacturing fiber closures are also capable of resisting the effects caused by relative motion between the different cable components in the system. A standard fiber optic closure must be efficient and compatible with all kinds of fiber optic cables as mentioned in the tender document or the manual. It is important to know about the cable compatibility before choosing the fiber closure. As the application area changes, the design of the fiber splice closure changes. Hence, the fiber closure for underground applications are different from that of aerial applications.
